Gold Standard is a locally operated company in Victoria, BC. Founded in 2018, our service offers include junk removal, bin rental, and local and long distance delivery services… which means we know a thing or two about what you can (and can’t!) put in your rental bins.
Here are 10 common items you may not have realized you can’t put in a bin rental:
1. Put Away The Pesticide Products
While we make a habit of using pesticides on our lawns without issue, we tend not to think about the safe disposal of these products.
If these are disposed of in a rental bin, the concentrated chemicals can create problems for the wildlife in your city. You may be able to return unopened domestic pesticide containers to the manufacturer or the vendor from which it was purchased; for any opened pesticide products, read the label instead for directions on how to properly dispose of them.
2. Say No to Contagious Medical Waste
Anything that has been in close contact with blood or other fluids is considered to be contagious medical waste. Examples are:
- Hospital blood bags
- Used needles
- Contaminated bedding
- Or any waste generated by a dental practice, laboratory, hospital, veterinary clinic, or physician’s office
These items typically carry the risk of human infection and should be disposed of separately from standard garbage.
3. Abrasive Cleaning Products Aren’t Welcome
The cleaning products we use to clean our homes do their job in removing germs and other harmful bacteria, thanks to the powerful chemicals found within.
However, the chemicals found within cleaning products can be harmful, which is why you should make a point of safe disposal… which involves not just throwing them into your rental bin! Furniture polish and oven cleaner, for example, will require a phone call to your local dump– don’t just pour them down your kitchen drain.
4. … And NEITHER ARE Vehicular Fluids
Vehicular fluids such as transmission fluid, engine coolant, and vehicular oil are right up there in the danger area with solvents and paint products.
These fluids found in vehicles function as precarious biohazardous materials. Because of this, it’s recommended to recycle these vehicular fluids if your local auto shop deems that it’s in acceptable shape.
5. Mixed Chemical Agents Are Another No-Go
There are various other cleaning products that have nasty chemicals and additives that can cause great destruction to the environment… and your neighbors!
To avoid mixed chemical agents reacting negatively with other chemicals or environmental stressors, look for the product online or get in touch with a poison control centre to confirm their preferred disposal alternative.
6. Bins Are An Adhesive-Free Zone
Under no circumstances should you put adhesives in a dumpster or rental bin. Glue, epoxy, and other types of bonding agents are not permitted– period!
The reason for this is because they can fasten other materials to the container’s walls, rendering the bin unusable.
7. And, Last But Not Least, Asbestos
Asbestos is one of the most dangerous things to have anywhere, whether it be your house, a work environment, and a dumpster.
If your home or workplace has asbestos, a licensed contractor should be hired to take away all waste safely and efficiently.
